As the wine industry moves towards more sustainable and resource-efficient models, circular economy practices play a crucial role in maximizing value and minimizing waste. The TRACEWINDU consortium—including experts from UAB, UNIPI, UT2A, INTI, and INTA—visited DERVINSA in Mendoza, a leader in wine by-product valorization, to explore synergies, knowledge exchange, and innovation opportunities

🔄 From Waste to Value: Circular Economy in Action
DERVINSA presented a comprehensive approach to utilizing wine industry residues, demonstrating how by-products are efficiently transformed into high-value solutions. Currently, the company focuses on large-scale applications that make economic sense, yet the discussions highlighted exciting opportunities to further capitalize on waste streams from different perspectives, including energy recovery, water reuse, and innovative bio-based materials.

💧 Energy & Water: Critical Vectors for Competitiveness
A key takeaway from the discussions was DERVINSA’s need to enhance efficiency in energy and water use to remain competitive. The team explored advanced European approaches to circularity in winemaking, opening a dialogue on best practices, innovative technologies, and strategies to address sustainability challenges in the Argentinean wine sector.

🌍 Bridging Knowledge: European & Argentinean Synergies
The visit reinforced mutual learning opportunities between Argentina and Europe. While DERVINSA leads in large-scale by-product valorization, European methodologies offer insights into alternative circular economy solutions, regulatory frameworks, and R&D-driven sustainability improvements. The TRACEWINDU project will act as a platform to facilitate knowledge transfer and develop tailored solutions aligned with both regional needs and global trends.

🔜 What’s Next?
Following this visit, the consortium will foster collaborations to explore innovative valorization pathways, improve resource efficiency, and adapt European circular economy strategies to the Argentinean wine sector. By connecting expertise across continents, TRACEWINDU is accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable and competitive wine industry
